For me, God should appear in my writing just as he does in my daily life. He doesnt flitter around my head like a butterfly, nor is he as distant as a polar bear in the arctic. In other words, I dont want to push God in peoples faces. I rather give the reader hits to his presence as the story progresses.
To paraphrase the words (and to ignore the original context) of Gustave Flaubert, I want God to be present everywhere and visible nowhere.
I've said it before on the mailing list: God shouldn't be some kind of Deus Ex Machina, some plot device that gets the heroes out of a jam once that author realises he's written himself into a corner. God is an important influence within the live of the main character of my story, though he finds himself doubting God's intentions at times. As I've said on an earlier mailing-list subject, the character hasn't had an easy trip thus far, and I keep making it difficult not only for him but myself. But God is there; make no mistake. :)
